How Many Dots Are on a Set of Dominoes?
A standard double-six domino set has 168 dots (pips) across 28 tiles. The number grows quickly for larger sets. Here's the full breakdown.
Pips and tiles by set size
| Set | Tiles | Total pips | Highest tile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Double-six | 28 | 168 | 6-6 (12) |
| Double-nine | 55 | 495 | 9-9 (18) |
| Double-twelve | 91 | 1,092 | 12-12 (24) |
| Double-fifteen | 136 | 2,040 | 15-15 (30) |
Why a double-six set has 28 tiles
A set contains every unique pairing of values from 0 (blank) to the maximum, including doubles. For a double-six set that's every combination of 0–6, which works out to 28 tiles. The pip total of 168 is simply the sum of all the dots across those tiles.
The math, if you're curious
For a double-n set, the number of tiles is (n+1)(n+2)/2 and the total pips is n(n+1)(n+2)/2. Plugging in n = 6 gives 28 tiles and 168 pips; n = 12 gives 91 tiles and 1,092 pips.
